The library has new shelving for the CD collection. They can be found in the library basement. Courtright has more than 2,000 CDs available to borrow. The rental period is seven days but you can renew four times. Visit the basement and see what music we have!

In other words, the annual Torch & Key book sale is beginning earlier this year. Starting Tuesday Sept 22nd at 9AM it opens to Otterbein then the next morning (7:45AM) it opens to the community. Hard back books go for 1 dollar and paperbacks are 50 cents. I randomly pulled 3 books - Fighting Mountaineers: The Struggle for Justice in the Appalachians by Edwin D. Hoffman (1979), My Parents are Divorced, too by Bonnie Robson, MD (1980), and The Cookbook of the United Nations (To Serve Man) compiled by Barbara Kraus (1964). All these and more will be available. So come early, come often, and buy up these books to support the scholarships for the Torch and Key Honor Society.

New Nighttime Graduate Assistant Bill Pearce

We heartily welcome the newest graduate assistant Bill Pearce. Bill will be working the late evening shift from 10PM.-2AM. A lifelong resident of Westerville, he is the father of two daughters, Meghan and Morgan, and is married to Jennifer Pearce, Director of Marketing and Communications for Otterbein College. He is currently in the MAT program pursuing his certification in middle school teaching with a concentration in science and social science. In his free time he enjoys kayaking, hiking, fishing, and the outdoors.

It may be known as “America’s newspaper,” but for more than a century, The New York Times has commanded an international readership. The world news and personal stories captured by this Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper for more than 150 years are available through ProQuest.

Kids Event this Friday!

Marlane Kennedy will be reading from her latest book, The Dog Days of Charlotte Hayes at 4:30 this Friday, August 28th. The reading will be at the library downstairs in Sarah's Corner.

As the reviewer Debra Lampert-Rudman notes, "Some very timely and interesting topics are covered in a gentle, first-person style. The Dog Days of Charlotte Hayes will appeal to both girls and boys who have ever felt like no one in their family understands them except, maybe, the dog."

Following the reading, make your way to uptown Westerville to celebrate the 4th Friday "Dog Days of Summer" from 6-9. If you hurry, you can get a free signed copy of The Dog Days of Charlotte Hayes with a donation for The Capital Area Humane Society. Copies are available at 6PM in front of the store Outside Envy (15 N. State Street).

Donations may be monetary, or they may be a new item needed by rescue groups, such as bowls, crate pads, food/ dog biscuits, collars, leashes, crate pads, dog toys, etc. Please, no used items.

American History in Video collection now available

American History in Video offers more than 5,000 videos covering many aspects of U.S. history. This collection is a fine mix of newsreels or short films detailing events as they happened and well-produced documentaries from The History Channel, PBS, A&E, and others.

Not only does this database offer great content, but it also offers great flexibility for teaching. Transcripts are provided, Playlists can be created and even clips can be cut to show classes.

Database cutbacks in news and health

Due to the end of a grant that was awarded to the State Library of Ohio, a few databases will no longer be available after June 30th 2009.

-- Consumer Health Complete (EBSCO)
-- America's News Magazines (NEWSBANK)
-- America's Newspapers (NEWSBANK)

However, there are some alternatives.
Health Source: Consumer Edition is a comparable database to Consumer Health Complete.

News magazines, such as Time or Newsweek, can be found in Lexis-Nexis Academic and Factiva. Likewise, newspapers can also be found in these sources.

Panel presentation about Diversity this Monday

Join us for the panel discussion "Do Diverse Worlds Connect @ Otterbein College" from 2:00-3:30 this Monday May 18th with a focus on diversity, making connections, and community building at Otterbein College. Panel members will represent the areas of Women Studies, Black Studies, Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered & Queer (GLBTQ), International Education, Disability, and Diversity. We need to hear your voices on these important issues! The presentation will include panel and round table discussions, with opportunities for everyone to contribute.

The Star Trek Connection

The library is now featuring a Star Trek display on the first floor with books and movies you can borrow. There have been a total of six series, ten movies and hundreds of books, comics, fan clubs, video games and even a themed Las Vegas attraction. May 8, 2009 the newest movie "Star Trek" opens nationwide.

Otterbein has its own 'Treckkie' connection. David Graf graduate from Otterbein's theater program in 1972 and has provided the voice talent for several Star Trek video games. He also appeared as "Leskit" in Deep Space Nine, and "Fred Noonan" in a Voyager series episode. Other friends of Otterbein, Brock Peters and Arnold Moss have also appeared in the Star Trek universe.

Courtright Welcomes Student Artwork

House Named Final Winner

Last year's runner-up, House, wins the final vote against Scrubs in the March Madness DVD Tournament. The popular Fox drama is in its fifth season and has received various awards and nominations, including a Peabody Award, two Golden Globe Awards and three Primetime Emmy Awards.

The library will soon be putting in an order for the available seasons so students and faculty can borrow the DVDs. Thank you to everyone who voted!

We are into the final rounds of our DVD competition. Since we started this competition two years ago, House and Friends have both made the Final Four. But this is the first year the square off against each other. In the other bracket, the newcomer 30 Rock faces Scrubs, which lost to last year's winning show The Office by only one vote. After some close match-ups, there are eight DVD series left in the March/April Madness tournament bracket. While House, Friends and Scrubs made it to the next round with no problems. Heroes barely managed to beat out Law & Order by the narrow margin of five votes.

DVD March Madness Contest Round 2

After a bit of a delay (we were experiencing technical difficulties), we are back in full swing with the DVD contest. Which television show will be added to the shelves, to sit beside Grey's Anatomy and The Office? As you can see from the bracket, none of the contests from the first round were close - House crushed Gilmore Girls with 78% of the vote, while the closest was John and Kate plus 8 with a comfortable 23 vote victory over Six Feet Under. But of course, that was last round! Will the final feature the two juggernauts House vs Family Guy as projected, or will a dark horse emerge? It is all up to you.

I learned at a library conference that the science journal PNAS offers these 5 minute podcasts from their site. For the time being they appear to be open to the public and cover a variety of science topics. Nutrition, plant biology, and chaos dynamics are a few of the current podcasts listed.

TV show March Madness contest returns

This is our third year doing a tournament of TV shows in honor of March Madness. 32 shows are going head to head this month to see which show is added to the library collection. We will purchase all available seasons for whichever show wins. Heavy favorites are House and Family Guy, but we'll have to see how the voting goes. The Physical Education Index allows you to acquire accurate and scholarly information ranging from physical education curricula, to sports medicine, to dance. Resource for English Department Students & Faculty

The Literature Resource Center is a library database that is often overlooked. It contains current and reliable online information you can use as a resource in your research. There are articles from more than 360 academic journals and literary magazines. There is a lot of information to browse and search, including; book reviews, including everything from children’s literature to adult fiction to non-fiction and scholarly studies, biographical essays on more than 130,000 authors, thousands of poems and short stories, overview essays on thousands of books and links to editorially selected websites on authors and their works.

New and updated material is added daily. If you are interested to learn more, or need help with an assignment, visit the site and check it out for yourself.

LearningExpress Library Version 2.0

The launch of LearningExpress Library Version 2.0 has a new interface and some new features for users. The layout had a makeover so it is now more easy-to-use and organized. Users will still have access to the same courses, tests, and reports as before. All current and completed tests stored in the former "My Account" section will now appear in the newly named "My Center" page.

Also, Version 2.0 features enhanced online help, from “Getting Started” tutorials to topic-based help. There is direct access to learning centers. For example, if you are promoting materials on the LSAT for students from your website, you can link directly to the LSAT Learning Center in Learning Express Library.

Library features trial subscription to AtoZMapsOnline.com: The World's Largest Map Database

AtoZMapsOnline features continent, country and state maps from all over the world. There are more than 4,000 maps in the collection, including political maps, physical maps, outline maps, population maps, precipitation maps, climate maps, and other thematic maps. New maps are added to the collection every month.

They are royalty-free, so they can be used by student and faculty for school reports, posters, presentations, and more. The trial subscription is here for the next 30 days so check it out while it’s available!

2009 READ Poster Winners

Congratulations to the Women’s Soccer Team and FreeZone for being voted as this year’s READ poster winning groups. They will be photographed with their favorite books and featured on posters to be displayed in the library.

Also, being recognized for their efforts is Otterbein Staff Council who will be featured on their own poster.

This is the first year that the library has opened the contest up to campus groups and hopes to continue the tradition in years to come. Watch for the new READ posters to turn up spring quarter!

Becker Gallery hosts the Reject Show

"the Reject Show" on display in the Becker Gallery in the library basement and at Serendipity Coffee House. January 31st-March 12th.

“the reject show” is organized by the student group the Starving Artists. Early in the morning after the juror has selected pieces for the “Otterbein College juried student art exhibition” members of the Starving Artists compile another exhibition of work from the art that was not selected for the juried show to be given a second chance as part of an exhibition.

This year, the library along with Serendipity Ice Cream & Coffee House (33 E. College Ave.) are happy to host "the reject show."

Reception is at Serendipity February 6th, 4-6P.M.

One Month Trial Worth Checking Out...

The library is featuring a trial for two new databases this month. While that might seem like a short amount of time, they are definitely worth checking out.

Early American Imprints, Series I. Evans (1639-1800) is a collection of all known existing publications from the early years of the American colonies and the young nation. You will everything from books to pamphlets to broadsides, and genre types include novels, sermons, obituaries, puzzles, songs and captivity narratives.

Early American Newspaper Collection (1690-1922) allows you to search and browse American newspapers published in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. There are nearly 2,000 titles from all 50 states. Read through editorials, legislative information, letters, poetry, advertisements, matrimony and death notices and more from the past.

READ poster contest is back

Last year the library picked three Otterbein students nominated by their peers or faculty to be featured on READ posters. This year the contest has been changed.

The library is currently accepting nominations for Otterbein groups to be featured on a READ poster. To meet eligibility your group must be recognized as an official group on campus. This can include but is not limited to, Hall Councils, Sports Teams, Fraternities, Sororities, Service Clubs, Religious Groups, Media Groups, Theme Houses, and Honorary Organizations.

To enter, submit a short essay no more than 300 words on why your group should be featured on a poster. The top two entries will be photographed with their favorite books and featured on full size posters. All entries should be submitted by Sunday, February 15 to PReichert@otterbein.edu or dropped off at the library reference desk.

Cochrane databases give nursing majors access to more evidence based research

The library now has access to the Cochrane Collection of Health Care databases through the Ebsco interface. Essentially, this is a collection of six different databases with a focus on evidence based medicine.

NHS Economic Evaluation Database (NHS EED) - This database looks at the cost of treatment. "Economic evaluations - the cost-benefit analysis of two or more different medical treatments - from around the world.."
Health Technology Assessments (HTA) - provides details of completed and ongoing health technology assessments (studies of the medical, social, ethical and economic implications of healthcare interventions). It contains systematic reviews, as well as ongoing and completed research based on trials, questionnaires and economic evaluations.
Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews - These full text reviews are highly structured and systematic, with evidence included or excluded on the basis of explicit quality criteria.
Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects (DARE) - abstracts (not full text) of published systematic reviews on the effects of health care from around the world, which have been critically analyzed according to a high standard of criteria.
Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials - a bibliography of controlled trials identified as part of an international effort to hand search the world's journals and create an unbiased source of data for systematic reviews.
Cochrane Methodology Register - a bibliography of publications which report on methods used in the conduct of controlled trials.

Note that the last three databases listed do not include full text. However, if you come across a useful article and you can't find the full text, don't dispair. You can always use interlibrary loan and request it. The average time it takes to obtain an article, which is mailed as a pdf to your Otterbein email account, is five days.

Native American Heritage Month at the Library

November is Native American Heritage Month. To celebrate Native Americans, a display of books covering topics related to historical and contemporary American Indian life and culture is currently located on the library's second floor display shelves. Library users are encouraged to browse through these books and to check out any that are of interest to them.

New resource for History Database

Ebsco, which houses Historical Abstracts and America: History and Life, recently unveiled an add on to these databases called Clio Notes. Essentially, Clio Notes are brief encyclopedic articles covering general time periods and major subjects within those periods. Further, once you examine the article, search headings are provided that take you directly back into the database to look for journal articles and other information.

100 Reference Books Online through Credo

Credo Reference gives you access to 100 reference titles from respected publishers. With this collection you can find everything from speedy answers, such as the definition of accoub in Benders' Dictionary of Nutrition and Food Technology, to long in-depth articles about Albert Camus in the Dictionary of Existentialism. Further, some titles include sound, animation, images and video.

You will find a range of materials in Credo Reference, everything from dictionaries (including bilingual), to quotations, encyclopedias, and subject specific titles in a wide array of fields.

Author reception for book about Erin McKenzie

Sunday November 9th at 4PM Barbara McKenzie, author of Reflections of Erin The Importance of Belonging, Relationships, and Learning with Each Other will be in the library for a reception and book signings.

Drawing on observations and stories from Erin's life, Barbara McKenzie hopes to reengage discussions about inclusive learning communities and the opportunity for all children to learn together.

Art display of Lithuanian Curses in Becker Gallery

Zita Sodeika's series of paintings illustrating Lithuanian curses will be on display in the Becker Gallery located at the bottom of the staircase until January. Although she finds inspiration in nature, many of these works focus on the foibles of humans and asks us to view ourselves anew.
Some of the curses illustrated are:
"May you go to hell to wash dirty laundry" (pictured)
"May your tongue stand up like a post."
"Oh, go and scratch nightcrawler's underarms"

Besides the ten Lithuanian curses, there are four larger works by Zita on display as well. If you are left wanting more after your viewing in the Becker gallery you can go over to the Fisher Gallery in the lobby of Roush Hall to other works by the artist.

About the Artist:
Zita was born in Lithuania and raised there until the Russian invasion during WWII. She lived in refugee camps until she was 14 then settled with her mother in Chicago. She attended the Chicago Art Institute and lived for 25 years with her husband and children in Willard, Ohio. She has exhibited in Chicago, Columbus, Wisconsin, and Lithuania, where the National Museum houses much of her work, including a 75-foot etching mocking the Berlin Wall, made from walnut-based ink she ground herself.

News videos are now available through America's Newspapers

The NewsBank database America's Newspapers now includes video news segments from the following sources: The Associated Press, Reuters, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, local affiliates of ABC, NBC, CBS, and Fox, as well as coverage from Canadian Broadcasting, Agence France-Presse and more. You can email these videos or embed them in presentations. Also, under bibliography you can format the citation for the video using APA or MLA style.

To find this video content, click on the Search Shortcut for United States.

In the middle of the page is a link for search shortcuts. Click on this link and you can limit your search to just find available video.

FIRSTLINK Online Directory available campus wide

The FIRSTLINK directory is now available online. FIRSTLINK is the local organization that facilitates connections; callers in need of services as well as individuals looking for volunteer opportunities.

The directory is divided into broad categories by agency or service and can be sorted by government or nongoverment. You can also sort by zip code. When using the directory, you will find contact information and a brief description of each service offered (there is no overarching description for each agency).

Annual Torch and Key Book Sale

Political Science resources on trial from CQ Press

Until October 23rd we can try out a number of products from CQ Press.

These include:
CQ Global Researcher - Similar to CQ Researcher but with a more global focus, this gives extensive overviews of contemporary issues (one report is on child soldiers) along with bibliographies, pro/con sections and much more.

Research Guides - These guides cover the Presidency, Congress, Political Campaigns, Elections and the Supreme Court. Each guide provides a wealth of information in the form of case studies, statistical data, analytical essays and more.

If you have an opinion about these databases, please contact Allen Reichert (preichert @ otterbein.edu). But you only have until the 23rd to examine them.

Naxos Music Upgrades

Naxos Music has made a few upgrades to their collection. Naxos now uses Microsoft Silverlight (a cross-browser & platform) media player to deliver their music and they have created an actual home page for their site. This makes Naxos easier to navigate and find the music that interests you.

Naxos is a fantastic source for classical, jazz, and world music, but it does include other forms, such as relaxation, spoken word and rock.

Four New Music Collections

The library now offers access to four new music collections--

Classical Scores Library - "will contain 400,000 pages of the most important classical music scores, manuscripts, and previously unpublished material, allowing for the study and analysis of more than 8,000 musical scores." Many of these scores are also found as audio tracks in the Classical Music Library.

African American Music Reference - "From early slave spirituals to 20th century movements revolving around jazz, blues, and gospel," this is a collection of reference texts covering up to the 1970s. Besides standard reference texts, this set includes images, discographies, songsheets and more.

Garland Encyclopedia of World Music - With more than 700 worldwide experts, this important reference source is now online with detailed articles about music from around the globe.

Classical Music Reference Library - This is a collection significant music reference sources, such as Baker's Dictionary of Music, that is now available online. It covers Medieval to the 21st century and includes terminology, biographies, critical texts, and much more.

Meet our Newest Librarian - Rares Piloiu

Rares Piloiu comes to Otterbein College from the Queens Borough Public Library System of NYC. Prior to his time at Queens he received his PhD in comparative literature from SUNY Buffalo and taught courses there for a number of years. He has also worked as a librarian in Germany and Romania. He is the liaison librarian for the departments of Education, Psychology, Theatre & Dance, and ESL.

New Look for Numerous Databases

At the end of July, Ebsco released their 2.0 interface. This new interface impacts many of the databases that the library subscribes to, from the general Academic Search Complete to specific subject areas, from nursing, theater, history, and many more.

Now you can easily cite your references in a variety of styles (APA, Chicago, MLA). The search screen has been modified to make it easier to use for a basic search and to give you more power and flexibility when doing an advanced search.

New Online Nursing Journals from LWW

The library has added over 70 new nursing titles online from the publisher Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (LWW) through the Ovid Technologies company. Journals from LWW include such titles as The Nurse Practitioner, Journal of WOCN(Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing), and JONA(Journal of Nursing Administration). And, according to the publisher:

LWW Nursing & Health Professions Premier Collection features two new exciting nursing titles: LPN 2006 and Nursing Made Incredibly Easy! both of which feature essential content that will support your nursing staff development needs. The collection also features additional "must have" titles that professionals in your institution will want including Biomedical Safety Standards and Journal of Patient Safety.

To see a complete title list and access these journals search the OPAL catalog by keyword "ovid technologies." Not only are these titles listed in the catalog, but they are also integrated into our A-Z journal list and will be linked by the "FIND IT" command when articles come up in CINAHL or another nursing database.

New Evening Supervisor - Carrie Zeng

This fall, you will be greeted by a few new faces when you are at the library. If you tend to study late into the night between 10pm and 2am, our new evening supervisor is Carrie Zheng. Carrie is an MBA student from Putiang (near Fuzhou in SE China). When she isn't working on her MBA or closing the library, Carrie does enjoy tennis and swimming.

Engineering Village - new database

If you are interested in Hamlet, this won't be of much use, but if you need geomechanics, then access to Engineering Village may be just what you are looking for. Actually, the village offers cross database searching of the following: Compendex, EI Patents, GeoBase, NTIS and Referex.

For more detail, as OhioLINK describes it:

Compendex contains references and abstracts from some 5,000 engineering journals, conferences and technical reports covering all engineering disciplines. Online coverage is from 1884 to date. Ei Patents comprises millions of patents from the US Patent and Trademark Office and European Patent Office. GeoBase is a multidisciplinary database of indexed research literature on the earth sciences, including geology, human and physical geography, environmental sciences, oceanography, geomechanics, alternative energy sources, pollution, waste management and nature conservation. Final Match - Library Style March Madness

Our tournament is down to the final two shows. The Office beat last year's runner up House by 30 votes. The other match was much closer - at one point Family Guy was down by 20 votes, but it came back to beat Friends by a single vote. You can check out the final bracket.

So which show will join Grey's Anatomy? Voting will run until next Monday, then be revealed here and on Facebook during National Library Week.

Wow! With just a few exceptions, this was a close and exciting round decided by 304 votes. We had two contests determined by one vote. The Office squeaked by Scrubs and Project Runaway did the same against Arrested Development. On the other end of the spectrum, House seems to be the show to beat, as it crushed Nip/Tuck. Will Boy Meets World be more competition? Which television show will be added to our collection? The next round narrows it further. TV show March Madness competition returns!

Once again the library is doing a tournament of TV shows in honor of March Madness. 32 shows are going head to head this month to see which show is added to the library collection. Whichever show wins will be collected in its entirety. For example, if Friends wins, we would buy the full run of the show. Last year's winner was Grey's Anatomy? Which show will join it? You decide! Watch your Otterbein email for links to the survey. You can follow the brackets at the campus center, or you can get your very own copy.

OhioLINK Video Contest

Students, faculty and staff from the 87 OhioLINK schools are invited to participate in this video contest to celebrate OhioLINK’s 15th anniversary. Your video can be serious or silly but it should reflect on what OhioLINK means to you, or how you would explain it to a friend.

The winner receives their choice between a new digital video camera, and a 160 GB iPod classic. Entries must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. EST on January 18, 2008.

Growing Season

The Life of a Migrant Community

Gary Harwood and David Hassler will be visiting Otterbein College as part of this year’s Common Book Program, presented by the Thomas Academic Excellence Series. Photographs by Harwood, and text by Hassler came together to tell the stories of a migrant labor camp in Hartville, Ohio. The photographs are on display now at the library, on the first and lower level floors.

They will both be on campus Tuesday, October 2, with a public discussion, including a slide show at 7pm in the Chapel.

Film & Television Literature Index allows you to find full text, scholarly articles, covering the entire spectrum of television and film. Subject coverage includes film & television theory, preservation & restoration, writing, production, cinematography, technical aspects, and reviews.

The database provides cover-to-cover indexing and abstracts for more than 270 publications (and selected coverage of more than 300), as well as full text for more than 70 journals and nearly 50 books.

The database can be useful to all students and faculty, especially in the English and Communication departments.

You can see details from the post at OhioLINK, but essentially there are almost 5,000 books right now from the publishers Oxford and Springer. New Face at the library

After 9 years as our Acquisitions Manager, Paul Heath left for a position within the IT department. And, while Paul is still near (both in terms of location and in our hearts) we had to look for his replacement.

It has been out for awhile, but you may not have heard that Time Magazine offers its archive online from 1923 to 2006 for free. That's right - for free. It looks like it is based on advertising, so I don't know if this will continue, but it is a great online source that won't readily come up in a simple Google or Yahoo search. You can also browse by covers. A great source for older material.

Evidence Based Nursing

This product from Ebsco (I'll call it a knowledge base for the lack of a better description) has been available, but not with a direct link. You're not sure what "Evidence Based Nursing" is? Well, here is the description.

Evidence-Based Complementary Medicine contains evidence-based information on herbs and natural remedies and the conditions they may be used to treat, as well as known or suspected drug interactions. The guide addresses the amount and type of evidence to support use of these herbs and supplements, as well as how patients may be using them regardless of current evidence.

However, don't become to enamored with this - Ebsco is planning on replacing it this summer with a bigger and better product, with a product title that better describes the contents. So, if you are interested, go on to Evidence Based Nursing.

Finding Survey or Poll information for your speech/paper

Lexis- Nexis has a number of polls from The Roper Center for Public Opinion Research. To quote from Lexis-

It covers the full spectrum of public interest including politics and government, public institutions, international relations, business, social affairs and consumer behavior and preferences. ... includes actual data from a wide variety of sources in opinion polling such as Gallup, Harris, Roper; ABC, CBS, CNN and NBC; Los Angeles Times, NewYork Times, USA Today and Wall Street Journal.

So how do you get to the polls? Well - go to Lexis-Nexis from the library homepage, either by the drop down menu or under Find Articles and more by title.

Once you are at Lexis-Nexis Academic, click on Reference (below)

After you click on Reference - from the center of the list choose Polls & Surveys (below)

Then try searching to see what is available - you may find some good stuff for your speech or paper. If you have any questions, contact the library.

Personally, I was a bit surprised by the results, particularly how far House went in the tournament. When putting the bracket together I didn't know if you would vote for shows that you wanted to watch but couldn't (such as on HBO) or if you would vote for favorite shows. Favorite shows won easily - and for this year it is Grey's Anatomy.
